How and when to wear mens knitwear
Knitwear is not just for the autumn and wintertime. Now that clothing is becoming more relaxed, knitwear really comes into its own. The key pieces for spring and even summer are our Hoi Polloi fine gauge knits, made in Italy, from the best quality Zegna Baruffa 100% Italian merino yarn. They are light weight and easy to wear and are available in a variety of styles and great colours, from perennial navies and blacks, to vibrant pinks and oranges.
The classic crew neck is always a favourite. It can be worn on its own, say with a pair of great smart trousers or just as easily with a pair of jeans. Or wear under a jacket to create a more casual way to wear tailoring. I like to think about the crew neck in the same way I would a t-shirt because it’s that easy to wear and layer.
The V neck version of the Hoi Polloi is wonderful for wearing over a shirt to give a contrast colour to the shirt underneath, in its most simplistic form say a navy sweater over a white or light-coloured shirt. For the braver maybe a small silk Scarf around the neck. For a cool, easy and timeless look, wear with a simple white t-shirt underneath.
The newest version, which has proved to be really popular, is the three-button polo neck shirt, which has a flat collar, and long sleeves. It works so well as a standalone garment, or under a jacket or even a suit, as it can make the suit feel, and look, dressed down and elegant.
The beauty of all these light-weight pieces, is that you can play with the different colours, either to create tonal looks or a contrast colour to accentuate the difference.
These pieces are a great travel companion as they are light and easy to pack into a small bag. Also whatever the climate, there are always a moments when the night air feels chilly or you are stuck in a cold airplane or an overly air conditioned hotel or office when to have one handy can make all the difference to being comfortable.
