What is it like to have a suit or jacket made to measure?

Made to measure is not exactly cheap, but the good things rarely are. In these days where we are all more wanting to reduce wasteage, one or two great quality pieces that will last for years is better than many cheaper alternatives. As the old adage says, buy cheap, buy twice....

So you are ready to take the plunge and go for it- what should you expect?  Firstly great service with someone who will listen and guide you through the made to measure experience, helping you navigate the infinite choices that you now have at your fingertips.

There should be an understanding of how the garment is planned to be used and an idea of the style that you are looking for. So think about what you will be using it for- is it a durable yet breathable work suit that is comfortable to wear all day long, or is it great quality everyday cotton trousers, or is it a special occasion garment such as a wedding suit or tuxedo? 9 these are just a few examples of the options available) Sometimes it’s difficult to articulate style, but our expert teams understanding of this and their skill at  guiding you through it is all part of the process and can be really fun. 

Then there is the measuring.  We keep samples of our various models so you would be able to try on our different styles, all designed by Mr Start and unique to us. We will take your measurements, then decide the kind of fit you would like for your jacket, trouser or suit - there are almost as many options for trouser styles as there are for a jacket! Whether you want a relaxed fit suit, a slim fit suit or something somewhere in between, all looks can be catered for through our made to measure service.

Details like the width of the lapels, the length of the jacket, the type of pocket and much more will then be chosen along with your lining fabric. All of these details can make a subtle or a huge difference to your made to measure garment. For example, you could go for a double breasted tuxedo jacket, yet add a patch pocket to the front and you have a slightly more unusual contemporary look. There are many different colours or patterns to choose from, so you can choose something special that reflects your personality - something calm and muted for everyday, or you can really go wild with bright colours and patterns! We have half lined, fully lined or even unlined options for a light summer jacket.

Then there are the buttons which can make an enormous difference to the look of the jacket and are very underrated. You can really change the look of your jacket or suit by choosing the right button. Depending on whether you are going for a classic or more contemporary style, something for work usage or for your special occasion, buttons help you achieve the look.  As an example, on a navy blue jacket if you were to put on a navy button it would not read and would not really be noticed, therefore it would create an understated feel. On the other hand, if you were to put a cream button or a mother of pearl one it would change the whole look, and become more of a summer blazer, ideal for a summer wedding suit.

Lastly, the timescales. So we are in a great position to be able to offer a 4 week turnaround for your made to measure garments. Once your made to measure suit arrives, we ask you to come in for one more fitting to check you are happy with the fit, and do any minor adjustments if neccesary.
